Transparent for the grid, grounded for the page that has to feel real.

One vehicle, one request. Whether it arrives as a clean cut-out or standing on a studio floor with its own shadow is a parameter, not a second image library.

The same vehicle, four ways to deliver it

Not four files in a folder. Four parameters on one request, decided by the surface you are filling.

Two image libraries always drift apart.

The usual fix for this is keeping one set with backgrounds and one without. Within a quarter a colour is added to one and missing in the other, an angle exists here and not there, and someone ships a listing page with three cut-outs and one photo on a white square.

  • A grounded car turns into a grey smudge at thumbnail size
  • A cut-out looks weightless in a hero
  • Two libraries mean two migrations every time something changes
  • Nobody notices the mismatch until a customer does

A cut-out inherits your page. A grounded car owns it.

In a results grid a transparent PNG is the safer choice: it takes on whatever background your design uses and never fights it. On a hero or a detail page, a grounded shadow gives the car weight without committing you to a fixed backdrop.

  • Transparent PNG for grids, thumbnails and dark themes
  • Contact shadow that keeps the car from floating
  • Floor reflection for a showroom feel
  • Opaque white delivery where a solid background is required

Questions we get about this

Are the cut-outs clean at the edges?

Yes. The transparency is rendered at delivery time rather than cut out of a photo, so there is no halo around the roofline or the wheels.

Can I have a shadow on a transparent background?

Yes, the contact shadow is rendered with the cut-out so the car does not appear to float.

Does this work for every vehicle?

Shadow, transparency and opaque delivery are rendered at delivery time for every exterior view, so availability is uniform across the catalogue.

What about dark backgrounds?

A transparent PNG works on any background, dark themes included. That is the main reason to prefer it in a grid.

Is a reflection available?

Yes, as showroom floor mirroring. It suits hero images more than dense listing grids.

Why one image cannot serve every surface, and why one source can

The image that looks best on a detail page is rarely the one that works in a results grid. A grounded car with a soft shadow feels present at large sizes and turns into a grey smudge at thumbnail scale. A clean cut-out sits perfectly in a card and looks weightless in a hero.

The usual answer is two libraries, and it fails

Most teams solve this by keeping two sets of files, one with backgrounds and one without. They drift apart within a quarter: a new colour is added to one set, an angle is missing in the other, and someone eventually ships a listing page with three cut-outs and one photo on a white square.

  • One vehicle, one request, different delivery options
  • No second library to keep in sync
  • Switching a surface from grounded to transparent is a parameter, not a project
  • Every option composes with colour, angle, format and size

What to use where

As a rule of thumb: transparent for grids, thumbnails and anywhere your background is not white. Grounded for hero images, detail pages and print, where the car should feel physically present. Both come from the same request, so the decision stays reversible.
